Medication Management — Staying Safe & In Control

Many older adults juggle multiple medications each day. While these prescriptions play an important role in keeping them healthy, staying on top of doses, timing, and interactions can be a challenge. The good news? With the right systems in place, medication management can be simple, safe, and stress-free.

Why It Matters

  • Avoid missed doses or accidental double-dosing

  • Prevent harmful drug interactions

  • Ensure medications work as intended

  • Maintain independence and confidence

Practical Tips for Medication Management

  1. Use a pill organizer – Weekly or monthly pillboxes with labeled compartments help prevent mistakes.

  2. Set reminders – Phone alarms, smart speakers, or medication reminder apps can give gentle nudges.

  3. Keep an updated medication list – Include name, dose, purpose, and prescribing doctor; bring it to all appointments.

  4. Use one pharmacy when possible – This helps pharmacists spot potential interactions.

  5. Try a “blister pack” service – Many local pharmacies will package your medications into clearly labeled morning, afternoon, and evening packs for each day. This can dramatically reduce confusion and make travel easier.

  6. Schedule regular medication reviews – Ask your doctor or pharmacist to reassess all prescriptions and supplements at least once a year.

  7. Store properly – Keep meds in a cool, dry place (not the bathroom) and away from pets or grandchildren.

Watch Out For

  • Changes in vision, balance, or memory that make it harder to manage meds

  • New symptoms after starting a medication

  • Confusion between similar-looking pills
