Senior Solutions Spotlight: Holiday Decluttering with Purpose

Holiday Decluttering With Purpose:

Making Space, Giving Back, and Spreading Joy

For many people (not just seniors), the holidays are a time of celebration, connection, and reflection. They can also bring a renewed desire for simplicity — to make room for guests, to ease the stress of excess “stuff,” or to begin preparing for future transitions. But sorting through long-loved possessions can be emotional, especially when items carry memories or were once cherished by family.

One way to make this process easier — and far more meaningful — is to donate to organizations that ensure your items directly benefit those who need them most. This season, I’m highlighting two outstanding local nonprofits whose missions blend generosity, dignity, and community care.

Common Threads Closet (Barberton)

Common Threads Closet in Barberton serves individuals and families facing economic hardship by providing clothing and household necessities at no cost. Their “shopping experience” is thoughtfully curated, welcoming, and tailored to preserve dignity.

Donations go directly onto their shelves, helping local individuals, seniors, and families who need support. They accept clothing of all sizes, shoes, accessories, bedding, small household items, books, and more — all of which become immediate blessings to someone in our neighboring communities.

The Giving Place (Medina)

The Giving Place accepts gently used adult and children's clothing, household items, linens, decor, shoes, small appliances, and seasonal items — especially useful during the holidays. They also accept furniture and will even do free furniture pickups! Donated items are sold and the funds are used to support other charities in the area.

Electronics Recycling

I'm a big fan of not letting anything go to waste and trying to keep things out of landfills, but sometimes that can be challenging. If you have electronic items you no longer need, you can take them to your local Goodwill donation-center participating in the Dell Reconnect program, which accepts devices (any brand, any condition) for free responsible recycling.

In this month's Senior Spotlight newsletter, we’re highlighting tips and resources to help seniors declutter wtih purpose.
